Is it possible to replace dell's video cards?

I have had my Dell Inspiron 1720 for a little over a year now. The graphics card that I bought with it was the 8600m gt, but after playing several games, I've decided that I need something more powerful. What laptop video card do you recommend and is it possible to install the card in the laptop since I bought it from dell?|||This is one of the many sad facts about laptops. You cannot upgrade the video card. Some of the newest laptops are attempting to change this, though not implemented with any common standards yet.

Your particular laptop has no way to upgrade the video card in any way.

Try searching for replacement laptop video cards and see what you come up with.

You'll have to live with what you got or sell it and buy what will fit your desires.|||Get an nVidia m series card that has a bigger number than 8600 (If they have them). Then use google or something and search for how to replace your video card.

You should probably check to see if the new card will fit in the laptop first.

If they don't have any better ones than the one you've got, get a desktop.|||no you cant, different to desktop pc's graphic card, you cant change/upgrade graphic card in your laptop|||There is noway to change the graphic card from laptop unless you want harm your mainboard.Just buy a brand new powerfull laptop.|||Alright there are 2 problems you will likely run in to. First, dell doesn't like other people fixing their computers, one of the ways they sell them cheap is because they weld things onto the motherboard so you have to return it to them to fix it. So, your graphics card COULD be soldered onto the mobo. Second, most notebook motherboards are designed for the graphics chipsets that they come with, instead of having a slot to easily change out the cards. Some laptops do however have a mini pci-e slot so you could switch them out. If you get by this and its possible to switch out your card I would recommend a 9800m gtx. Look at notebookcheck.net, any of the class 1 cards should be sufficient. Let me leave you with this, If your not satisfied with the performance of your computer playing games, you may want to explore other options such as upgrading ram/processors. An 8600 should be able to play most games pretty well, you may need to get an actual gaming laptop. Sorry for the long answer but good luck
