How to select a video card for a Dell XPS M1730?

I own a Dell XPS M1730 and wish to upgrade it's video card but I don't know how to select a video card compatible with my computer/mother board. Note: don't know which motherboard my computer has and I wish to have a list of compatible video cards to select the proper one. Thanks in advance for your help.|||unfortunately video cards for laptops are customized.

the only way to get one is either from DeLL directly or on eBay (or the like).

if you have a 8700m, an upgrade to a 8800m GTX (or 9800m GTX, but the two don't differ much) is worthwhile.

of course, getting an SLI (thus, two GPUs molded in one card, the predecessors of the GX2s & the like on the desktop) makes sense.

a new one costs 500 bucks or more...

2nd hands are cheaper but...

beware that taking a laptop apart is a little trickier then even an advanced desktop tower; again, each laptop is a custom job, having its own setup, thus you need to get a technical manual and be 200% of what & how you do it...

PS: rather then the GPU, you may also want to check if the CPU is powerful enough; the most powerful (X9000) can still cope with recent games, but if you have a slower version, upgrading the GPU may not help, as the CPU simply can't deliver the data to the GPU to precess; start the task manager before a gaming session & when in a situation where it lags, pause it & maximize the task manager; if the two cores are 100%, the CPU is probably the problem.
